Edit and export existing subtitles

Open a subtitle file you already have, correct its text, and download the result. No account and no credits are needed.

Free workspaceNo credits required

Before you start

  • You need a text subtitle file: .srt, .vtt or .ass.

  • You do not need an account. On the sign-in screen, select Continue without account. Your project and your edits are then kept in this browser on this device.

  • The task uses no credits and starts no AI Operation.

  • Your file is not changed. SubFT reads its text and keeps your edits in a separate editable copy.

Edit the text and download the file

  1. Create a project from your subtitle file

Open Projects and select New Project. Keep Files as the import source, select Add files and choose your subtitle file. The file appears under the import source and Project name is filled in from its name. Select Create project.

The project opens and lists the file as one item.

If the file is not listed after you chose it, its extension is not one a project accepts. File support lists them.

  2. Open the subtitles in the editor

Select Open media on the item, then Open editor beside the subtitle.

The editor shows every cue with its start time, end time and text under Cues.

If the editor reports invalid formatting, it names the line where reading stopped. Correct that line in a text editor, then create the project again.

  3. Correct a cue

Select a cue in the list. Its text opens in the Text field beside the list. Type your correction.

A moment after you stop typing, the status beside Export reads Saved. With your first change, the name of the document gets a suffix: you are now working in an editable copy, and the imported file stays as it was.

  4. Download the subtitle file

Select Export. In Export subtitle track, choose the Output format and keep Download as the destination. Select Download.

  5. Result

Your browser saves the subtitle file to its download folder, and the app confirms that the download started. The file contains your corrections. The editable copy stays in the project, so you can continue later and export again.

Check the result

Open the downloaded file in a text editor or load it in a media player together with its video. The cue you changed shows the new text, and the timing of all cues is unchanged.

The file you imported is still the original. Only the downloaded file contains your edits.

If something goes wrong

The export offers only a download. Writing the file beside its media (Export sidecar) needs a directory project, and a directory project needs an account. A download works in every project.

The editor says the saved subtitle changed and asks you to reload. The same document was changed in another tab or on another device. Your last changes in this tab were not saved. Reload the document, then make the changes again.

The project is missing in another browser. Without an account, a project exists only in the browser where you created it. Sign in before you create a project that you want to reach from elsewhere.
